WHAT IS MAJORETTES ALL ABOUT?
COMPETITIONS
Majorettes in the association we belong to compete in teams. There are sections in competition for the following teams:
Babies - aged up to 6
Dinkies - aged up to 9
Tinies - aged up to 11
Juniors - aged up to 15
Seniors - no age limit
The Tiny, Junior and Senior sections are split into division 1 and division 2. The other sections have no divisions.
Each team consists of an average of 12 places plus a Leader, and optional Mascot. The teams learn a routine, which consists of an entry, dancing, twirling, marching and maneuvering, and an exit. The Leader heads the team and gives signals for starting, stopping and direction. It is the Leaders job to keep the team correctly spaced and centered in the arena. Mascots often mirror the leader, but do not give any signals.
The teams spend the out of season months (October to April) learning, practicing and perfecting their routine, before heading out to events to perform and compete against other troupes. Each team is marked on their entry, exit, timing, spacing, choreography, uniform (how pristine, not how nice), and baton work. The Leader and Mascot are marked separately. Competition is fierce, and results can be decided by as little as one quarter of a point.
Further points are awarded after the competition, which go towards Troupe of the Year at the End of Season Championships. At each competition a maximum of 4 points can be earned for 1st place, and minimum of 1 point for attendance. Therefore, if we are to stand a chance of winning the top prize at the Championships, it is essential that we not only win as much as possible, but we attend as many competitions as we can, in order to accumulate the most points
We practice at the Town Hall in Silsden at the following times:
